Tulevaisuuden tutkimuksen tärkein tehtävä tulee olemaan ruutuajan kehityksen perässä pysyminen ja tutkimusmenetelmien sekä muuttujien yhtenäistäminen. Ruutuajan mittaamiseen ei ole käytössä minkäänlaista objektiivista ja yhtenäistä mittausmenetelmää. Ruutuajan objektiivinen mittaaminen auttaisi kuvaamaan sen käyttöä niin laajana kokonaisuutena, kuin se nuorten elämässä nykyään ilmenee. Yhtenäistämistä kaipaisi myös tutkimusten vakiointi, varsinkin liikunnan, sosioekonomisen aseman ja painon osalta. Koska ruutuajan ja lihavuuden välinen tutkimus tuottaa ristiriitaista näyttöä, johtuen useasta mahdollisesta muuttujasta tämän yhteyden välillä, voisi yhtenevä vakiointi auttaa yhtenevän näytön tuottamisessa. Suomessa aiheesta olisi tärkeää tehdä lisää tutkimusta laajemmalla ja enemmän peruspopulaatiota kuvaavalla tutkimusotoksella. Ruutuajan ja television on havaittu olevan jo yhteydessä heikentyneeseen ruokavalion laatuun, mutta ruutuajan alalajeista tarvittaisiin ehdottomasti lisää tietoa. Kiinnostavaa olisi saada tietoa ruutuajan eri lähteiden ja/tai tietyn ruutuajan lähteen, kuten älypuhelimen eri käyttömahdollisuuksien yhteyksistä ruokavalioon. Nuorten runsaimmin käyttämä ruutuajan lähde, älypuhelin, on hyvin vähän ruokavalion yhteydessä tutkittu muuttuja.

Nuorten kohdalla ominainen median erilaisten käyttötapojen nopea vaihtelu ja jatkuva muutos (Salomaa ja Palsa 2019) tuottavat tutkimukseen ja suositusten laatimiseen lisähaasteensa.

Nuorista jo kolmasosa viettää digitaalisessa mediassa aikaansa intensiivisesti, eli lähes koko päivän ajan (Boer ym. 2020), ja olisikin hämmentävää, jos tällä ei olisi vielä tuntemattomia vaikutuksia kyseisen ikäryhmän terveyskäyttäytymiseen ja terveyteen, esimerkiksi ruokavalion kautta. Varmaa tietoa on kuitenkin jo esimerkiksi elintarvikemainonnan vaikutuksesta lasten ja nuorten ruoankäyttöön ja onkin tärkeää, että saadaan tietoa muunkin ruutuajan kuin television elintarvikemainonnasta, jotta myös se saadaan tarvittaessa sääntelyn alaiseksi. Kiinnostavaa olisi saada myös lisätietoa ruutuajan intensiivisen käytön yhteydestä keskittymiskykyyn ja nälkäsignaaleiden havaitsemiseen ja näiden kaikkien muuttujien yhteydestä nuorten ylipainoon, joka on edelleen yksi merkitsevimmistä nuorten nopeasti muuttuneen elämäntavan oireista.

Tutkittavaksi jää, millainen vaikutus nuorten runsaalla ja monipuolisella digitaalisen median käytöllä on ja onko vaikutus aina edes negatiivinen.

7 JOHTOPÄÄTÖKSET

Lisääntynyt ruutuaika näyttäisi olevan yhteydessä runsaampaan kokonaisrasvan ja tyydyttyneen rasvan sekä einesten käyttöön, sekä vähentyneeseen vaaleiden viljojen käyttöön ja energiansaantiin. Nämä yhteydet vaikuttavat olevan painosta, liikunnasta, unesta ja vanhempien tulo- sekä koulutustasosta riippumattomia. Tuloksiin on kuitenkin suhtauduttava varauksella, sillä tutkielman otos vaikutti olleen terveystietoisempi kuin Suomen peruspopulaatio ja vertailukohteena käytetty aikaisempi tutkimus poikkesi aineistoltaan ja menetelmiltään toisistaan ja tästä tutkimuksesta. Tulevaisuudessa olisi tärkeää tutkia ruutuajan eri lähteitä, varsinkin älypuhelinta, sekä runsaamman, mutta nykyään melko yleisen, yli 5-tuntia ylittävän päivittäisen ruutuajan yhteyttä nuorten ruokavalioon. Lisätieto auttaisi uusien tarkempien ja sopivampien ruutuaikasuositusten laadinnassa. Nuorten ruutuaika on nykyään runsasta ja lisääntyy nopeasti, ja tästä syystä maltillisetkin ruutuajan ja ruokavalion yhteyteen liittyvät tulokset ovat merkittäviä.
