9.4 Objectivity as Confirmability

Guba (1981, 88) presents confirmability as an alternative criterion for objectivity. The researcher’s predilections may cause bias for which it is necessary that the researcher foster self-critical attitude and practice reflexivity. Keeping a journal on a regular basis would be critical as well as having an outsider evaluate the research, analysis and interpretations, verifying that they are truly supported by existing data. (Guba (1981, 88; Tuomi & Sarajärvi 2018, 120–122.) The researcher aimed to acknowledge her possible presuppositions and strive for objectivity during the research process, but again, scarcity of external feedback could have set limitations.
