Call for papers

Special issue on ’gender, organization and society’

Guest editors Saija Katila, Anne Kovalainen, Susan Meriläinen & Janne Tienari

The question of gender has intrigued organizational and management scholars in diverse ways. To encourage researchers to share their views on current organisational/social issues we invite contributions to the special issue of LTA on ’gender, organization and society’.

We are supposed to live in a gender-neutral world. Nevertheless, the first act of social categorization when encountering the

’other’ is to ascribe a gender identity. It is an act that is considered natural. However, it carries assumptions of femininity and masculinity as well as gender roles. Societal arrangements often reflect these conscious and unconscious everyday categorizations of gender. Gender positions are manifested in segregation of jobs, wage gaps, hierarchies, advertising, space arrangements etc. Gendered assumptions are of cultural and societal origin, and thus vary across nation-states. There are, however, some striking similarities across national boundaries.

The relationships between gender, organization and society are highly complex and problematic. To valorize these complexities we invite theoretical and/or empirical papers discussing, for example, the following themes:

– construction of gender in organizations (for example gendered professional identities, manifestations of masculinities and femininities)

– gender, organizational change and global transformation – sexuality in organizations

– women and/or gender in management and politics – gender in advertising and media

Also papers dealing with feminist re-readings of (organization) theories and cross-national/cross-sectoral comparisons of gender relations are most welcome. The context of the papers does not have to be focused on business firms, but can be extended to working life, labour markets or politics.

We invite all researchers interested in the relationship of gender, organization and society to submit their papers to the special issue of LTA, planned to be published as No 3/2000.

All papers must be submitted by 30th of November 1999. Please note the LTA ’Information for authors’, and submit four hard copies of your paper to the following address:
