UNIVERSITY PRESS

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

Introduction

Helsinki University Press (HUP) is a fully open access University Press, publishing peer reviewed, high-quality academic literature. HUP’s focus is particularly in the human- ities and social sciences, and the Press is open for submissions by academics globally.

This annual report covers the year 2021, during which the Press published 11 books and 3 journals.

Helsinki University Press (HUP) had a suc- cessful publishing year 2021. The Press pub- lished 11 books during its second operating year, including two books from book series.

This means a significant increase in book publication, as the Press published 6 books in 2020.

HUP ensures that all publications undergo a rigorous peer-review process. During 2021, the total peer review duration for proposals was in average 10 weeks. With full manu- scripts, the total review time average was 12  weeks. The total duration includes both editorial and reviewers’ review processes.

HUP’s book proposal acceptance rate was 44 per cent at the end of 2021, and the man- uscript acceptance rate after peer review 75 per cent.

The Press offers researchers support and services to make sure that publishing their work in Open Access is smooth, profession- al, and of high quality. The services include copyediting by native speakers, indexing by professional indexers, and an experienced HUP contact person to guide researchers through the whole publication process.

VISION

HUP aims to be an internationally-known open access publisher of high-quality monographs, multidisciplinary edited volumes, and journals.

The dissemination of HUP’s publications has continued to grow, and books published in 2021 have been downloaded and viewed almost 12,000 times in 135 countries during the period. At the same time, books pub- lished in 2020 have been downloaded and viewed almost 20,000 times in 2021 (see Appendix A, Tables A1 and A2, and Map A1).

Overall HUP’s books have been download- ed/viewed almost 44,500 times in over 150 countries in its first two operating years.

Additionally, six book reviews have been published on HUP’s books in 2021 (See Ap- pendix A, Table A3). In November 2021, the International Political Sociology (IPS) Sec- tion of the International Studies Association

(3)

awarded Marjaana Jauhola’s book Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh (2020) an Honourable Mention for the 2022 IPS Best Book Award.

Jauhola’s book is part of HUP’s book series Pro et Contra. Books from the Finnish Politi- cal Science Association.

To reach as wide audiences as possi- ble, the HUP editorial team is committed to promote the Press’ publications in mul- tiple ways. All HUP’s books are indexed in Crossref and relevant library databases. Ad- ditionally, books are stored in several digi- tal archives, such as JSTOR and OAPEN, to ensure that publications are easily accessed globally. The Press is constantly seeking new archives and repositories to widen the read- ership of its books. Information on publica- tions is communcated via HUP’s social media outlets, but most importantly, HUP actively promotes book reviews of new publications by contacting relevant academic journals di- rectly. Researchers find book reviews to be one of the most informative forms of mar- keting.

HUP has continued to publish three jour- nals, Estetika, Nordic Journal of Migration Re- search (NJMR), and Redescriptions. All three journals’ access, views, and downloads have grown from the previous year. Both NJMR and Redescriptions were accepted into Sco- pus during 2021. The journals have their own editorial teams and academic boards, and they run their publication processes inde- pendently from the Press. During 2021, the journals have published altogether eight is- sues with 73 articles (including research ar- ticles, book reviews, and editorials).

The first three-year term of the HUP Ac- ademic Board came to its end in June 2021.

The board was partly renewed, with a focus on including scholars from outside the Uni- versity of Helsinki. Seven members contin- ued their duties and 5 new board members were nominated by HUP’s Steering Group in June 2021 for the term 2021–2024. New board members include researchers from

renowned universities, such as LSE, Univer- sity of Cambridge, UNC Charlotte, and Uni- versity of Stockholm. Six board members come from outside of Finland, three are from the University of Helsinki, and three members are from other universities/insti- tutes in Finland, including one member from the Finnish Environment Institute. For a full list of the members of the academic board, see Appendix B. See Appendix C for full list of the steering group members.

Books

The Press publishes high-quality scholarly literature, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, and follows a rigorous peer review process. All HUP’s publications are freely avail- able online via the Press website and other platforms. HUP aims to reach as global an audi- ence as possible including readers in the Majority World where high paywalls can be a major challenge. We believe that absence of paywalls increases the societal impact of research by allowing readers outside of academic institutions an access to scholarship.

In 2021, HUP published nine stand alone books and two books as part of HUP’s book series. The authors and contributors of these books come from 47 research institutions in 19 different countries.

All HUP’s books are free to download in in PDF and they can be bought as print-on-de- mand. Most books are also available in EPUB and Mobi formats.
