4.2. Subject knowledge analysis

4.2.1 Participants with translation education

The analysis of the subject knowledge competence begins, again, with a look at the translations and translation comments of the students that have received translation education.

Information source finding

Translator 1 listed a number of sources they used in aid of their translation process. They listed all of the ways they used to search for and find these information sources as instructed by the translation comment. Translator 1 writes that they first begun to search for Finnish equivalents for the special language terms in the source text. They used a google search for

“League of Legends termistö” and looked at the League of Legends Wikipedia article. They note that these sources helped them conclude that different translations were used for the same special language terms, depending on the source. The translator continues that they used the MOT dictionary for general purposes, as it has helped them since their first year of studying translation. The last way of finding information sources was, according to translator 1, using their own five-year knowledge of playing League, following e-sports, streamers and YouTubers as well as utilizing the vocabulary their gaming partners use.

The full list of sources used by translator 1 is as follows:

 MOT -dictionary

 eSports-vocabulary - League of Legends (https://www.nordicbet.com/fi/blogi/esports-sanasto-league-of-legends/)

 League of Legends Wiki Terminology

 League of Legends Wikipedia (https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Legends)

 Personal knowledge

 Finnish friends that play League

Translator 1 provided the most detailed explanation of the ways they used to find the sources and how they used them. They also included their own game knowledge (they had rated it as 5 out of 5) and included asking their friends on the list of sources.

On the topic of personal knowledge, they write that they relied on their understanding and gaming experience when it came to the special language content and terminology.

The full list of sources used by translator 2 is as follows:

Translator 5 wrote in their translation comment that they found their sources using unspecified internet search engines. They also noted that the game League of Legends is somewhat familiar to them, so they had gained familiarity with the vocabulary throughout the years of playing the game.

The full list of sources used by translator 5 is as follows:

They did not list their own knowledge of the game but mentioned that the game is familiar to them so they have prior knowledge of the vocabulary. They had listed their knowledge of the game as 5 out of 5.
