6 CONCLUSION

6.2 Outlook: further research and development

The outcomes of this thesis project have been conceptual and practical recommendations based on the findings of the literature review as well as the applied research and SD methods. Before any of the proposed changes are implemented, consultations of team members and further development are needed. By organizing the recommended measures in a difficulty and importance matrix, the team could prioritize the proposed changes and decide which proposals should be developed further and in which order (Crawford, 2018b). Proposed changes that are easy to realize can be implemented quickly.

For larger alterations and changes that require a lot of effort, a complementary study on their technical and operational feasibility could be reasonable (Strengths and Weaknesses of Online Learning, n.d.). It might also be advisable to work up ideas that shall be developed further into prototypes or more refined designs first (Crawford, 2020). These further steps in the SD process could for instance be realized in a consecutive co-design workshop with emphasis on fast

prototyping and testing. As mentioned in the previous chapter, the aim should be to continue including users in the development process, as there is evidence that services that are developed in continuous consultation with communities gain greater momentum among the target groups (Brown and Wyatt, 2010;

Kummitha and Crutzen, 2017). Given that the study was only able to include a small group of alumni in the co-design workshop, future studies should aim to involve other segments and groups of alumni in the process of giving feedback, brainstorming and ideating.

Once changes to the digital learning offers and new service aspects have been implemented, further studies should analyse their effects on user satisfactions as well as ROE and ROR. Further surveys could help the team to measure alumni’s responses to the implemented changes and offer comparative data (SurveyMonkey, n.d.), while interviews and focus groups could offer more in-depth insights to assess if the new services are what users want them to be (Nicklin, 1996). For a long-term evaluation of the new learning offers, an evaluation system or scoring model should be introduced

Another important aspect will be to constantly monitor the development of the portal’s user group as well as the service environment as they might see relevant changes over time. For example, over time, new user groups with different needs and interests might appear. Furthermore, the general circumstances might change: the study was conducted in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic which stirred worldwide interest in digital networking and learning. At the same time, during the pandemic more and more digital learning formats appeared which has increased competition in the market. It is yet to show how the demand for digital learning generally and among users of the Alumniportal Deutschland will develop once the pandemic abates. For example, it is possible that the demand for digital learning offers as well as the amount of time that alumni would like to spend on digital LLL on the Alumniportal Deutschland decreases once new face-to-face options are available again.

Besides the aforementioned opportunities for further development work based on the thesis project there is also potential for further research in the field of digital alumni learning. The literature review revealed that not much literature

exists on the topic of national alumni strategies and portals. Also, the topic of learning offers specifically for alumni is not well covered by literature as well. As there are only few studies, articles and books related to these issues, the author had to draw on different sources on topics connected to the core subject, like alumni strategies of single institutions and digital offers for lifelong learning. A future study should seek to look at new and emerging studies about digital learning offers as part of alumni strategies as well as the work of national alumni portals and how their impact can be measured. Another interesting field for further research would be to examine further examples of designing with alumni and the effectiveness of this approach. Long-term opportunities to extend the study comprise an evaluation of the learning outcomes of the revised services, which could also be extended to question if the learning offers have effects on alumni’s work placements and career development. Lastly, another interesting research objective would be to examine the effects of a peer-to-peer learning approach on learning motivation, user engagement as well as learners’

persistence in the portal’s digital learning activities. All of these research measures could add additional knowledge to the findings of the thesis.
