In my early teens I was interested in radios and built some myself. Even
tually I moved on to more complicated things like computers, which were just emerging at the time. I was very curious about the inner work
ings of computers and quickly learnt that computers use binary num
bers and are based on logic. At the same time I was interested in atheism and free thought, which led me to philosophy.
My father Ilkka Väänänen, MD, had interest in philosophy and I was exposed already at home to books by Eino Kaila and Georg H enrik von Wright. M y mother A nni-Tytti Väänänen, an English teacher, was in
terested in continental philosophy and had books by Sartre, Jaspers, Heidegger, and de Beauvoir in her bookcase. As a teenager I was particu
larly impressed by von W right’s book L ooginen em pirism i (D en logiska em pirism en, 1945). In 1967 I got as a Christmas present von W right’s book Logiikka, filo so fia j a kieli {Logik, filo so fi och språk, 1957), which particularly fascinated me. A family friend gave me some papers by Jaakko H intikka on epistemic logic. At the same time my primary inter
est was in mathematics and it was clear that I would study mathematics after high school graduation. In fact I went already from school to lec
tures by e.g. Olli Lehto in the university.
My first logic course was Seppo M iettinen’s course on mathematical logic in the Summer University of Helsinki in 1970. The inspiring dis
cussions with M iettinen raised my interest in logic. So I decided to fol
60
low Paavo Turakainen’s course on mathematical logic in the fall of 1970. I also followed lectures by von W right on determinism and by H intikka on philosophical logic. Eventually I became part of a group of students who read in self-organized reading seminars various logic texts, such as Bell & Slomson’s M odels a n d U ltraproducts, which had just ap
peared in 1969. Later we read a manuscript of Gerald Sacks’s book Sa
tu ra ted M odel T heory (1972), which we got from Seppo M iettinen who had followed the Banach Center Logic Year in W arsaw 1972-1973.
There was also a seminar organized by Oiva Ketonen in which we read Paul Cohen’s Set T heory a n d th e C ontinuum H ypothesis which had ap
peared in 1966. I wrote my M aster’s Thesis on general topology (Pseu
docompact Spaces) in Sammatti in our family’s summerhouse during the summer of 1972.
In the winter 1971-72 the lecture notes ”Soft model theory” of Jon Barwise made their way to Helsinki and we went through them with great interest. In the fall of 1972 Ronald Jensen gave a course on infini- tary logic and admissible sets in Oslo and Seppo M iettinen brought the lecture notes to Helsinki and we read them through also with great in
terest. On the first page was the definition of a partial isomorphism, which became an important concept in my career. W e continued in Helsinki with lecture notes of a course on abstract logic by Janos Ma- kowsky that he gave in W arsaw in the spring of 1973. This and Jensen’s notes brought me in touch with infinitary languages and generalized quantifiers, which have remained my main field ever since. Having w rit
ten my Master’s Thesis in topology, I hesitated for a moment whether I would continue in general topology or move to logic. In April 1973 I went to the Third Scandinavian Logic Symposium in Uppsala and my decision was made. In this Uppsala meeting I met Per Lindström whose pioneering papers on abstract logic and generalized quantifiers we had read in Helsinki. Meeting Lindström reinforced my interest in abstract model theory.
Having decided to pursue studies in logic I applied for an exchange grant to Oslo. I spent the fall term 1973 in Oslo attending another course by Ronald Jensen, this time on forcing and admissible sets. To
gether with fellow students from Helsinki, Juha Oikkonen, Seppo M iettinen and Tenho Vanhanen, I followed in Oslo also a course by
61 Keith Devlin on model theory and by Jens Fenstad on generalized re
cursion theory.
In the fall of 1973 I applied for a UNESCO grant to Poland, the heartland of logic. I was lucky enough to get the grant and thus traveled to W arsaw in January 1974. The legendary Andrzej Mostowski (1913—
1975) became my supervisor in the Palace of Culture in the middle of Warsaw, which was the location of mathematics department at the time. Mostowski had given ten years earlier lectures on the development of mathematical logic and the study of foundations of mathematics in the Summer School in Vaasa, Finland. These lectures had appeared in 1965 in the sericsA cta Philosophies, F ennica (Fasc. XVII) and I had stu
died them carefully before going to Poland. Mostowski had also written a pioneering paper on generalized quantifiers in 1957 {Fund. M ath. Vol.
44). I ended up w riting my licentiate thesis on hierarchies of generalized quantifiers, which was accepted in September 1976, w ith Ilkka N iini
luoto as the supervisor.
In 1975 Logic Colloquium in Clermont-Ferrand I met for the first time Saharon Shelah, with whom I share a continued interest in abstract model theory and with whom I have subsequently co-operated and written many joint papers.
W hile still in Poland, where my grant was initially for one year and only later extended for another year, I applied for a grant of the Oskari Fluttusen Säätiö Foundation which offered opportunities for w riting a doctoral thesis in ”one of the old universities in England”. I got the grant and started in Manchester University in January 1976.1 had asked Peter Aczel to be my supervisor. I met Aczel in the Third Scandinavian Logic Symposium in Uppsala, April 1973, and later again in the Set Theory and Hierarchy Theory workshop in Karpacz, Poland, 1974. I spent the years 1976-1977 in Manchester University enjoying very much Peter Aczefs teaching on constructive mathematics and Jeff Par
is’s course on models of arithmetic. I have remained a close friend of both and over the years we have exchanged frequent visits back and forth.
The topic of my doctoral thesis arose as follows: Richmond Thoma
son had asked in 1966 Q.S.L. vol. 31) several questions about logic with free quantifier variables. The problem was the following: Can we
axi-62
omatize the common properties of all quantifiers? For example both the existential and the universal quantifiers satisfy the schema ”If QxA(x), then Q x(A(x)vB(x))”, but of course there are other quantifiers that do not satisfy this, such as ”for all but one”. Yasuhara proved in 1969 {Fund. M ath., vol 66) that the common properties of all quantifiers cannot be axiomatized because it is a non-recursively enumerable set. I combined some known results to conclude that this theory is not Sig
ma-1-2 or Pi-1-2. W hen I showed the proof of this to Aczel, he sug
gested that by assuming Gödefs Axiom of Constructibility the proof could be extended to show that the theory is not Sigma -1-n or P i-l-n for any n. I got very excited about this and after some time I was able to prove the consistency of this theory being D elta-1-3, which is then the optimal result. This work gave rise to the question, what do we know of an inner model of set theory, if we know that it is cardinal-absolute, that is, all of its cardinals are real cardinals. This work is still going on.
One particular approach that I had has later proved useful and has been since reinvented by others elsewhere. This is the approach of forc
ing absoluteness. The idea is that by iterating a proper class of forcing notions we can reach a model, which is in a sense immune to further extensions. M y special interest was in forcings with the countable chain condition (c.c.c.). In the Logic Colloquium 1977 in Mons, Belgium, I met Jonathan Stavi who had similar ideas and we started an active cor
respondence, leading to a joint paper ”Maximality Principles for the C ontinuum ” {Contemp. M ath., 302). The paper was finished 1981 but the paper itself took an unusually long time to appear, and it finally ap
peared in 2002. I travelled across U nited States in 1982 and later giving talks about the maximality principles (Caltech, Boulder, Madison, New York) but I felt that the reception was lukewarm. Recently generic abso
luteness has become quite popular.
M y study of generalized quantifiers in various models of set theory led me to a general investigation of the set-theoretic definability of ab
stract logics. One particular question left open in my thesis has been solved only recently. This is the question whether the Löwenheim- Skolem-Tarski number of the Härtig- (or equicardinality-) quantifier can be the first weakly inaccessible cardinal. In my thesis I showed that the solution of this problem needs so-called large cardinals, and indeed
63 in the recent cooperation with Menachem Magidor (Jerusalem) we show that by starting from a supercompact cardinal one can prove the consistency of a positive answer.
The Doctoral Defense in December 1977 was very different from what I had seen in Finland. The external examiner Professor John Bell came from London. He, the supervisor Peter Aczel and I went into an empty lecture room, and John Bell asked me questions for about an hour. I did my best at the blackboard. I had sweated the previous night preparing myself for the most devious questions, but in the end, and perhaps because of it, I was well on top of everything. In the beginning Professor Bell said some nice words about my work, which calmed my nervous mind. Some questions were about details of proofs and some were about possible future work. Then it was over. In the evening we had a dinner in a local restaurant. I rented a gown, had a photo taken in a photo shop and sent it to my mother.
Some time in the mid-eighties Risto Hiipinen called me and asked if I wanted to organize the European Summer M eeting of the Association for Symbolic Logic (ASL) in Helsinki. I accepted the offer, and the ASL Logic Colloquium 1990 was held in Helsinki, coinciding with a total solar eclipse in the early hours of Ju ly 22. Eventually I also organized the ASL Logic Colloquium 2003 in Helsinki. Another important event that I ended up organizing twice is a semester of logic in the Mittag- Leffler Institute of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Djurs
holm near Stockholm, Sweden. I organized this together with my col
leagues in 2000/2001 and again in 2009. The Logic Colloquiums and the Mittag-Leffler Institute semesters brought top logicians from eve
rywhere in the world to Scandinavia and especially Finland. During my doctoral studies I spent seven years abroad, a reason maybe for the fact that over the years I have had a constant stream of visitors in Helsinki and Helsinki has become one of the centers of the study of a particular branch of mathematical logic, namely set theoretic model theory.

Filosofian historian tent
tikirjana isälläni oli ollut Karl Vorländerin kirjoittama ja Erkki Kailan suomentama vuonna 1911 ilmestynyt Vanhan ajan j a keskiajan filo so fi
an historia.
timme kirjahyllyssä A ntti J. Pietilän 1910- ja 1920-luvuilla kirjoittam at jotkut teokset ja Yrjö J. E. Alasen 1950-luvun alussa julkaisema kristilli
nen siveysoppi. Kirjojen joukossa oli kaksi Lundin yliopiston systemaat
tisen teologian professorin, Anders Nygrenin, kirjoittamaa teosta.
Toinen oli D en kristna kärlekstanken gen om tid ern a I—II (193 0-3 6), toinen taas D ogm atikens vetenskapliga gru n d lä ggn in g m ed särskild h ä n syn till den K ant-Schleierm achersk a problem ställnin gen (1922). Edelli
nen, systemaattisen teologian jonkinlaiseksi klassikoksi muodostunut teos, ei koskenut tiedon perusteita. Jälkimm äistä teosta voitaisiin aina
kin osittain luonnehtia sellaiseksi. Parhaiten tiedollisia perusteita koske
vaan kiinnostukseeni olisi vastannut Nygrenin väitöskirja R eligiöst apriori, dess filosofisk a fö ru tsä ttn in ga r och teologiska konsekvenser (1921), joka puuttui kirjakokoelmasta. Kahteen viimeksimainittuun teokseen sain opintojeni myöhäisvaiheessa aiheen perehtyä. Varsinaisen filosofi
singin teologinen tiedekunta voisi tarjota minulle mahdollisuuden perehtyä uskonnon tiedollisia perusteita koskeviin kysymyksiin. Armei
jan jälkeen, ennen kirjoittautum istani teologiseen tiedekuntaan vuonna 1960, valmistauduin tiedekuntaa varten lukemalla teologiseen alkutut- kintoon kuuluneen J. E. Salomaan kirjoittaman Filosofian historian I—II.
tettyjen tiedollis-kriittisten selvitysten perusteella. Tutustumisellani
67 Kantiin Salomaan Filosofian historian välityksellä tuli olemaan merki
tystä myöhempää väitöskirjaani ajatellen. Ylioppilasaikanani seurasin kiinnostuneena erilaisten keskustelujen ajatuslinjoja.
Pääaineekseni valitsin teologisen etiikan ynnä uskonnonfilosofian.
Aineen oppituolin haltijana oli Lauri Haikola, jonka spesialiteetti oli 1500-luvun luterilainen teologia. Hänen johtamassaan proseminaarissa sain mieleiseni Kant-aiheisen tehtävän, tehdä selkoa Kantin G rund- legu n g zur M etaphysik d er Sitten -teoksen sisällöstä käyttäen hyväksi Salomaan kaksi vuotta aikaisemmin ilmestynyttä Kant-biografiaa.
Tuloksesta muistan saaneeni myönteistä palautetta. Dogmatiikan seminaarissa sain kirjoittaa Kantin esikriittisen filosofian Jumalaa koskevista käsityksistä.
Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst-apurahan turvin suoritin 1963-64 teologisia opintoja Heidelbergin yliopiston siihen aikaan mai
neikkaassa teologisessa tiedekunnassa. Teologisten luentojen ja seminaa
rien ohella osallistuin Hans-Georg Gadamerin filosofian johdantoa (muutakin kuin johdantoa) ja Ludwig Giefiin Kantia (ynnä edeltäjiä) käsitteleviin luentoihin. Mahdollisuuksien mukaan syvennyin Oku- menisches Studentenheimin kirjastossa Kantin Kritik d er reinen Ver- nu nft -teokseen tehden samalla muistiinpanoja.
Kahtena viimeisenä lukuvuotena valmistelin jo teologian pro gradu- tutkielmaani hyödyntäen isältäni oppimaani muistilappumenetelmää.
Haikolalta kysyin, voisinko kirjoittaa graduni Kantin Kritik d er reinen Vernunft -teoksen tietoteoriaa ja Jum alaa koskevien kontekstien suh
teesta.
ta, josta mainitsen ainoastaan Dieter Henrichin transsendentaalifiloso- fiaa koskeva artikkelin. Valmistumisen aikoihin (1965) sain jo osallistua
68
Haikolan ja Åbo Akademin systemaattisen teologian professorin, Gott
hard Nygrenin (A. Nygrenin poika), yhteiseen lisensiaattiseminaariin.
Gotthard Nygren oli perehtynyt mm. ruotsalaisen filosofin, Axel Häger- strömin, uskontoa ja totuutta koskevaan ajatteluun. Raskaan pappistyön ohella jatkoin teologian ja filosofian opintojani. Osallistuin syksyllä 1965 Erik Steniuksen proseminaariin, jossa esitin ajatuksiani Kantin kriittisen filosofian Zz^c^-käsitteestä. Keväällä taas sain hädin tuskin aikani riittämään Georg Henrik von W rightin normilogiikkaa esittele
vään esitelmään Haikolan ja Nygrenin lisensiaattiseminaaria varten.
Nygren kysyi minua assistentiksi Åbo Akademihin. Keväällä 1966 sain osittaista virkavapautta papintyöstäni systemaattisen teologian assisten
tin toimen hoitamista varten. Heinäkuun alusta sain vuoden ajaksi mää
räyksen assistentiksi, mutta jo seuraavan vuoden alusta olin virkavapaa Suomen akatemian humanistisen toimikunnan vuodeksi (ja myöhem
min lisävuodeksi) myöntämän apurahan käyttämistä varten. Teologian lisensiaatin tutkinto oli siihen aikaan kaikkine laudatureineen, sivu- ja tukiaineineen vaativa tutkinto, jonka osasuoritukset verottivat varsi
naista tutkimusaikaa.
Lisen
siaattityölleni ehdotin itse otsikon. T inget i sig i Kritik d er rein en Ver- n u n ft syntyi kokonaan Turussa, jossa Åbo Akademin ja Turun yliopiston kirjastot tarjosivat apuaan. Kirjoja ja artikkeleita sain kauko- lainaamalla Helsingistä ja ulkomaisista kirjastoista. En enää turvautunut aikaa vievään muistilappujärjestelmään - enkä koskaan myöhemmin
kään.
Lisensiaattityöni, jonka tarkastajina olivat Gotthard Nygren ja Georg Henrik von W right, valmistui syksyllä 1968.
Suomen tarjoamat tutkimusmahdollisuudet olivat tutkimusedellytysten kannalta rajalliset. Jotta olisin paremmin voinut perehtyä kansainväliseen tutkimustilanteeseen ja tutkim uskirjal
69 lisuuteen oli saatava apuraha Saksassa tehtävää tutkimustyötä varten.
Tein anomuksen Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftungille ja onnistuin saamaan apurahan. Vuoden 1969 lopusta lähtien toimin assistenttina kunnes lähdin Saksaan lokakuussa 1970 - tällä kertaa filosofista tutki
mustyötä varten.
Humboldt-Stiftung osoitti ohjaajakseni Saksan etevimmän Kant- asiantuntijan, Dieter Henrichin, Heidelbergin yliopiston filosofian pro
fessorin.
Taas kului kuukausi. Tällaista oh
jausta joku voisi sanoa riittämättömäksi, mutta tähän käsitykseen itse en yhdy. Lukemalla etukäteen hänen tuotantoaan saavutin samalla edelly
tykset hänen asiantuntevien neuvojensa ymmärtämiseen. Selventääkseni väitöskirjani kannalta yhden tärkeän osa-alueen jäsentymistä Kantin ajattelun kontekstiin, kirjoitin D er F reih eitsb egriff in K ants Kritik d er reinen Vernunft -nimisen käsikirjoituksen, josta näkyy Henrichin vaiku
tus. Jussi Tenkku, itsekin Kantista kirjoittanut, hyväksyi kirjoituksen käytännöllisen filosofian pro gradu tutkielmana toukokuussa 1971, jol
