Scholarship guide for degree

students

Information and instructions

The Åbo Akademi University Foundation and Åbo Akademi University hold a number of grant funds in trust. On a yearly basis in February, scholarships are announced from these funds to students at ÅAU. The regulation for each scholarship has been stipulated according to the donator’s wishes. Most of the scholarship funds are held in trust by ÅAU Foundation.

In this Åbo Akademi University scholarship guide for degree students, you can find information on scholarships for students studying for a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree and who are enrolled as present for studies. Guest students cannot receive scholarships listed in this guide. Information on scholarships for doctoral students can be found on the intranet. Please read the following instructions carefully before you submit your scholarship application.

The application

The call for applications for most of the scholarship for students takes place once a year, this year it opens in May, from 2022 in the autumn. The application period this year is 1.5.2021-17.9.2021 at 15.00.

You apply for scholarships for students electronically by filling in the form on this website. There are three scholarship categories:

1. General scholarships are open for application for all degree students on bachelor/master level

2. Faculty scholarships are open for application for students studying a specific subject or at a specific faculty in accordance with the scholarship regulations

3. Special scholarships have special stipulations e.g. regarding background, specialisation in studies or life situation

Please go through this scholarship guide carefully in order to find out which scholarships you are eligible to apply for and get acquainted with the scholarship regulations.

Scholarship regulations

A general scholarship regulation and the regulations for the different scholarship funds can be found at the student offices. Parts of the regulations, i.e. special conditions stipulated for each scholarship fund, can be found in this guide. The presentation of the scholarships includes:

1. Special conditions regarding eligibility

2. Information on how often the scholarship is granted and potential special arrangements in relation to this

3. Information on the amount in 2021 (and in some cases 2020)

Before applying for a scholarship, you should read this information, in order to avoid applying for a scholarship without being eligible for it. The most usual regulation is a requirement that the scholarship only can be granted to Swedish speaking students. Therefore, scholarships are divided into two groups:

1. Scholarships with a language clause, i.e. scholarships for students with Swedish as their first language

(3)

2. Scholarships without a language clause, i.e. scholarships, which can be applied for independently from the first language or in particular cases with a different first language than Swedish.

Please note that the requirement to have Swedish as a first language differs. For some scholarships it is absolutely necessary to meet this requirement, while for others Swedish speaking students are given preference. It is therefore recommendable not to completely disregard those scholarships with a language clause if you meet the other requirements.

When a scholarship regulates that the scholarship should be given to students who are less well off, all students are considered as students as a group can be considered to in general be less well off.

The scholarship application procedure and decision

The scholarships are issued by the rector of ÅAU or by the faculties. Please prepare for the processing of the applications taking a relatively long time, two to three months. The names of those awarded a scholarship, will be published on the website of ÅAU. The anonymity of the scholarship receiver is allowed only if the student has a confidentiality flag and/or the student has been awarded the scholarship on the basis of a medical condition or similar. These students are informed the scholarship decision by email (no names published). The decision on granting a scholarship is in most cases based on study performance during the past two semesters (2020- 2021 meaning 1.8.2020-31.7.2021) in relation to the amount of semesters enrolled as present.

Only completed courses that are recorded in the study register by 17.09.2021 qualify. The scholarships are processed and distributed according to faculty division.

Enrollment as present

In order to apply for scholarships, you need to be enrolled as present at ÅAU.

Enclosures

Scholarships that require justifications/enclosures are marked with ? on the application form and when you place the pointer above the ?, you can read what is required. More information can be found in this guide and in the scholarship regulations. Please note which scholarship funds require enclosures and upload them electronically to your application (scanned or photographed). Name the files of the attachments as follows:

 Your name

 What the attachment regards

 Scholarship fund number for those scholarship funds for which the enclosure should be regarded (this can be left out if the enclosure regards parental leave or military/civilian service).
