New active and multifunctional square offers people of all ages mixed sociality and new experiences.
People from the neighborhood and from all over the city feel welcomed and they find different kinds of things to do.
There are a pop up area enabling happenings and markets, a play area with equipment, hanging around and relaxing area. However, there is an easy access to the square as well to the public traffic in Väinönkatu.
The main elements at the square are grass vegetation and perennials, artificial grass for sitting areas, stone pavement and water. A part of the stormwater management provides water as a natural element to the square. Stormwater route on market square is also possible to use in play. Children can float a paper boats in it. Circulating pipe water are used for waterfalls. The right amount of water per minute will generate the effect that traffic noise is not disturbing anymore.
NEW URBAN GREEN at the square is sustainable. Because of the deck structure big trees are not very sufficient where as our solution about a climbing plant tree will provide the rhythm, the feeling of the high vegetation all year around. Furthermore, the climbing plant shell can be used for lighting purposes.
The well-being and activity trail connects the museum yard and the square. The trail offers play and fitness training equipment along the trail as well as benches to sit and relax.
There is also sustainable energy on market square. Ground material is new sunpanel which is walkable. It can charge and be used for the electricity. That area also contains the electricity charinging bikes in what people can charge their phones.
NEW URBAN GREEN is grass vegetation and perennials. These vegetation areas are suitable for above the deck structure where the circumstances are challenging in terms of the sustainability. The solution also works well in the case of the rescue cars. The dimensioning of the rescue trail is
important and the certain reinforcement acts will be needed.
NEW URBAN GREEN and sustainability can be achieved also along the trail. The backrest of the benches is built out of willow branches. These green benches will create they own individual atmosphere and they will be built by people themselves.
The surroundings of the museum will provide picnic, experimental and cultural area for visitors. The entrance from Harjukatu already tells about the history. The Torikunkku- sculpture stands in the middle of the roundabout. The story of the Torikunkku can be listened digitally.
NEW URBAN GREEN are the picnic benches. These kinds of benches were used in the cities from the middle ages. They create a part of the cultural historical atmosphere. The area is good for art and exhibitions.
The courtyards will be planned together with the residents. The main themes will be relaxing, urban farming and other activities. The Doorstep green describes NEW URBAN GREEN which can be private, but will be opened for public for some days. Inner yards are made out of stones which will have the feeling of a cozy rug in a living room. In this way the inner yards are like common living rooms for residents. Urban farming is possible on those yards.
Lighting is implemented with new technologies like LED etc. The area is lighted with spot lights from the front walls from the buildings. The benches are lighted from the underneath. On market square we promote the of city of Jyväskylä as a City of Light. The vine tree plants are lighted and they are also possible to light with different colors for example in the winter time.
