5 REENGINEERING AND EXTRA BENEFITS

5.2 POSSIBLE EXTRA BENEFITS OF RFID TECHNOLOGY

5.2.6 Economical Aspects

It is very difficult to evaluate some qualitative parameters in economical justification process. But it is clear that these kinds of parameters are important in any business. Features like accuracy, reliability and simplicity of use are so important that each of them is a reason for changing present system.

It is mentioned in Section 2.5.1 “Raw Materials” that average time for daily production report is 15 minutes per operator. If only 200 operators are using this automated system then 3000 minutes is saved per working day, it is more than 7 operators working time.

On the other hand, two operators are working full time for data entry, by establishing the new system, manual data entry is not necessary at all. Even if we suppose one operator is busy with the new system, still 8 operators have been released from nonproductive processes to productive processes. Releasing 8 operators out of 200 operators, it means 4% saving in workforce.

6 SUMMARY

All research, discussion and analysis based on practical experience and knowledge of production processes combines with new scientific methods and makes a good understanding of the

problem. It forms a stable foundation for the presented solution.

I believe this is an acceptable and practical solution, but it needs a high quality hardware implementation too. On the other hand, like in any other project, a disciplined management during the project life cycle is required.

Finding a simple and mistake free method, especially for operators in production line is a great challenge. In production line, many raw materials and goods are common or very similar, operators may be suspect that they have reported their work or that they have not, boring reports and other related topics have made it a difficult task for operators. The new method is very simple; just show the tags to the readers, if you have doubt show it again.

Based on the scope of thesis, the main concept and design in this phase intends to insert data to database. But another great story starts here. Gathering and collecting reliable data is a base for other systems. Using this data in an expert system and a management information system is more valuable. I strongly recommend the company to have a plan for using this data. The whole project for SKC could be considered in 3 phases:

 Designing automated data gathering system (Scope of this thesis)

 Hardware implementation

 Software development based on gathered data

The first step has been done, the second step can be entrusted to a qualified hardware company, and the last step can be done by an internal software team of SKC or entrusted to external software experts.
