8.2. Britannian EU-ero vuonna 2021 ja tutkimuksen jatko
2021 tammikuussa Britannia erosi lopullisesti EU:sta. Pitkien neuvotteluiden jälkeen joulukuussa 2020 britit saivat neljä vuotta kestäneet kauppasopimusneuvottelut päätökseen EU:n kanssa. Tämä neuvotteluprosessi näki kaksi eri pääministeri Britannian taholta, ensin James Cameronin eroa seuranneen Theresa Mayn, jonka erottua Britannian nykyinen pääministeri Boris Johnson astui virkaansa. Jo kevättalvella 2021 Britanniaa on syytetty Irlannin rajasopimuksen rikkomisesta, ja sen kautta koko Brexit-kauppasopimuksen ehtojen rikkomisesta.148
Mitä tulee tähän pro gradu työhön, teemassa on vielä tutkittavaa ja olisikin kiinnostavaa keskittyä esimerkiksi vuoden 1975 kansanäänestykseen EU-jäsenyydestä ja sen ympärillä käytyyn

52 keskusteluun ja sen eroavaisuuksiin Brexit-keskustelun kanssa, nimenomaan historiapoliittisesta näkökulmasta. Samoin UKIP-puolueen diskurssit ja niiden suhde brittiläisen euroskeptismin jatkeena olisivat kiinnostava suunta tutkimukselle. Kaiken tämän suhde 2010-luvulla tapahtuneeseen oikeistopopulismin nousuun ja aktualisoituneeseen tyytymättömyyteen mitä tulee puoluepolitiikkaan ja edustukselliseen demokratiaan olisivat myös kiinnostavia tutkimuskohteita historiallisessa kontekstissa. Veronica Kollerin, Susanne Kopfin ja Marlene Miglbauerin toimittama Discourses of Brexitin artikkelit ovat syventyneet Brexitiin ja sen ympärillä käytyyn keskusteluun monesta eri näkökulmasta ja käsittelevät monia niistä tutkimussuunnista, joihin tätäkin tutkimusta voisi jatkossa viedä.
Tämän tutkimuksen materiaali on ollut myös hieman suppea suhteessa siihen, kuinka laaja poliittinen tapahtuma ja historiallinen jatkumo siinä on yritetty käsitellä. Aineistonkin kannalta laajennusmahdollisuuksia olisi siis runsaasti, joko esimerkiksi muihin lehtiin, erityisesti tabloid-lehtien materiaaliin. Konseptihistorialliselta kannalta euroskeptismin rakentuminen konseptitasolla olisi myös kiinnostavaa. Parlamenttilähteet ja lehdistölähteet tukevat toisiaan erinomaisesti, joten tämän näkökulman yhdistäminen parlamenttikeskustelujen tutkimiseen laajentaisi huomattavasti tutkimuksen näkökulmaa ja selitysvoimaa.
