The email conversation with the head of Ilomantsi high school regarding certain information related to this study:

“Hello,

no problem. Answers below written in blue. I hope they are useful (and understandable).

Is it not very easy to explain the whole system, but if there is still something you would like to ask, please do so. I take our correspondence as a useful practice of English.

a.) Do the high-school education have any fees, or the students just pay for their books?

Students just pay for their books (perhaps about 1 200 € for three years, if one buys all as new) and in the last year the payments for their final exams, baccalaureat, about 140 €. Many high schools make students buy also a lap top for studies. But there is no fee for studying in Finland.

b.) Do the students get free meals and transportation from their home to school?

Students have free meals in every high school in Finland.

In Ilomantsi the municipality organizes and pays for the buses and taxis for those who would have to travel more than 5 kilometres to high school. Municipality gets some of the costs back from Kela, social insurance institute of Finland, for the students who would have to travel more than 10 km. But it pays all from 5 – 10 kilometres. The transportation is a big expence in Ilomantsi, although smaller pupils use the same taxis and buses also. In most towns the high-school students have to pay fo the transportation themselves.

c.) Is the high-school situated near city-centre, how far the students have to travel to come to school? Do all the students stay nearby to the the school or come from far away? How do they travel ?

xii

Ilomantsin lukio is situated in the centre of Ilomantsi. Some of our students live 50 kilometres from here. Some of those who come from very far stay in a little dormitory (ordinary flat in a townhouse near the school; this year 4 students). Staying is free for the students, and they can stay there from Monday to Friday during the school year.

More than a half of our students use transportation, of which Ilomantsi municipality has organized all but the bus that comes from Joensuu. So there is practically no public transportation in Ilomantsi, only the school lines to different villages in the morning and two times (14.00 and 15.35) in the afternoon. Some pupils and students come with their parents or by bike or motor bike (and the eldest students by car).

Ilomantsi municipality gets a certain amout of money from the state to organize schooling, but it is not enough. So Ilomantsi has to put it’s own money (tax revenues), too. Luckily the city council (and their voters) have chosen to do so. Otherwise there wouldn’t be a high school here.

I am really apologetic for disturbing you with my queries, but these queries enriches my thesis by providing information regarding the Finnish way of living by students of high-schools.

Sincerely,

Samriddhi Bose”

Aihe: Re: Additional information for the research

xiii Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

I am sorry to ask you again since I get no information regarding this small details of the student's life from any book or internet. Could you kindly answer me few questions:

a.) Do the high-school education have any fees, or the students just pay for their books?

In the secondary education (high school or professional school) are no study fees. In the high schools students pay for their books and in the professional schools everything is free – including books.

b.) Do the students get free meals and transportation from their home to school?

Meals are offered by the schools in the secondary education. The school transportation is then another case. The students get so called travel support from KELA (The National Social Insurance Institution), which covers most of the travel expenses.

c.) Is the high-school situated near city-centre, how far the students have to travel to come to school? Do all the students stay nearby to the the school or come from far away? How do they travel ?

Our school is in the city centre and most students have just only 1 to 2 kms, but we have students that have up till 36 kms´travel one way. Younger students use bus / public transportation and many older drive their cars alone or together with friends.

I am really apologetic for disturbing you with my queries, but these queries enriches my thesis by providing information regarding the Finnish way of living by students of high-schools.

Sincerely, Samriddhi Bose
