Revaluing Construction
Revaluing Construction
• To substantially increase the (perception of) value from construction for both clients/users and the industry
• Through a radical reform of the construction process, industry, sector and market
• Comparable to the UK “Rethinking
Construction” approach, but worldwide (in
developed / industrialized countries)
CIB and Revaluing Construction - 1
• 2001 - 2002: global survey and regional RC workshops with surprising similar perceptions of main problems / possible solutions
• Not technology, but focus on: process
integration, client orientation, new procurement models and culture
CIB and Revaluing Construction - 2
• 1st international RC conference
– February 2003 in Manchester
• Planned RC activties 2004 - 2005
– CIB RC website and newsletter
– Global inventory of national RC (= Construction Reform) programmes --> establishment of worldwide liaisons – Voluntary CIB commission projects
– Agenda 21 on RC
– International Construction Clients’ Forum
– 2nd CIB RC conference in March 2005 in Netherlands
CIB Themes for Industry Development
• Sustainable Construction:
– from energy consumption and environmental impact issues to triple bottom approach with long term social and economic issues included
– still a theme / driver for change?
• Performance Based Building:
– client requirements as process integrator = basic concept for Revaluing Construction
• Revaluing Construction:
– Not about technology, but:
– Performance, Procurement, Process and People

-Practical Thoughts for Practical Issues-
For key issues of the Pilot Action ‘Single-Entry-Point’, practical recommendations had to come from different actorsin order to provide a ‘holistic’ working definition:
oAn ‘ideal’ Single-Entry-Point:
a mean for independent access to “innovation information”
oAn independent ‘holistic’ Single-Entry-Point for SMEs (or involving SMEs):
Feasibility?
oInformation to be found upon ‘single-access’ to information point:
SMEs know what SMEs need
