Visiting Fellowships to the Social Science Research Institute

The Social Science Research Institute (www.samforsk.abo.fi) at Åbo Akademi University invites international scholars to apply for scholarships in our Visiting Fellowship Program. Visiting Fellowships are intended to foster research and writing suitable for publication in a journal. Applicants should be engaged in cutting-edge empirical or theoretical work in the fields of public opinion, political behavior, electoral studies or democratic innovations, and hold an ongoing position at a university or research institution.

The institute specializes in research on public opinion, political behavior and electoral studies, as well as in experimental research on citizen deliberation. Its researchers are well connected in the international political science community. The Institute is located at both campuses of the University, in Åbo (Turku) and Vasa (Vaasa). Currently, the Institute hosts a center of excellence for the study of the future of democracy (www.futudem.fi) and The Finnish Research Infrastructure for Public Opinion (www.firipo.fi). We encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with both projects and embed their proposed visits within these research agendas.

Visiting scholars are expected to be in residence at Åbo Akademi for the fellowship period and participate fully in the academic life of the Institute, engaging with both researchers and faculty members. The call covers the year 2022 (Jan-Dec) and is open to applicants at all academic career stages. The length of the visit should be between one and three months. The Social Science Research Institute will provide the Visiting Fellows with a workspace and a monthly scholarship of 2,000 euro to cover expenses during the stay. Additionally, accepted Fellows (2-4 scholars) will be given financial assistance for travel to and from Åbo. To apply, please send the following documentation to Research Director Lauri Rapeli by e-mail (lauri.rapeli@abo.fi) no later than December 5, 2021.

An outline (max two pages) of the research you propose to conduct during the visit and how the proposal fits within the research agendas of FutuDem and Firipo

A brief curriculum vitae (max two pages)

Letter(s) of reference
