1. Explain briefly the following (one point each)
a. film theory for heat and mass transfer and its relaxation to fluid flow b. Reynolds averaging
c. Lagrangian methods in CFD d. Flow regimes in fluidization
e. multiple reference frames method for stirred tanks
2. Estimate permeability for a packed bed with 1 mm diameter spheres. You can assume that the void fraction in the bed is 35%. Hint: use Ergun equation’s viscous part for estimating pressure drop.
3. An aerated tank is mixed with an impeller. Calculate minimum impeller speed (in rpm) to avoid impeller flooding, and calculate specific power input (W/kg). You can use the following
parameters:
tank diameter 2 m liquid height 2 m
impeller diameter 1/3 of the tank diameter gassing rate 0.1 VVM (vessel volume / minute)
aerated liquid density 900 kg/m3 and viscosity 0.001 Pas Power number of the impeller in gassed system is 2
