According to the programme of the 1'halassological Institute, the custonn- ary sumroer eruise for the exploration of the waters around Finland took place in .kly 193,1. The results are published below.

'Scctiooi I (p. I-13) contains temperature, salinity, density (o't = (st --1) I 000), liiy Trogen ion activity (p jj), otygen content, percentage of oxygen saturation and alealinity for various deptlis af the stations inv estigate(l (see position of stations on mapp At the bottorn of each separate table the follow- ing n-ieteorological data are given in the order, in which they are eriunieiated:

direction of the wind, force of the wind (Beaufort), barometric pressure (inin), air temperature (centigrade), relative humidity, motion of the sea (U O), cloudiness (°/zi1 'o/ii,) and eventually rain . thundei 1 or mist -. At the end of the section theree is a table (hage 13) of the transparence of the water without and with colour filters.

~See/WO II (p. 14-17) contains temperature and salinity of surface water, saanples of which vvene taken every hour vhen the ship was in motion. The surface observ-ations made on board the liners of the 6nlaiid Lins Hvill be pnblislied in the Bulletin Hydrograpliique (Copenhagen) only.

For details about instruments etc. the reader ie referred to earlier publica- tions in this series, see for instance the description of the swnimel cruise in 1937, given in ikr 49, in mhich the inaterial is disposed of in the same manner as below.

On this cruisee samples were also collected for the purpose of stnclying;

flee calcium n content of the water; the results will be published l later.

The cruise was made raider the di.recton of the author with the assistance of 31r TORSTEN ST HOLM and l'Ir Eero hAifA.

The chemical analyses were performed at the laboratory of the Institute.
