Project Information
• Tekes – Finnish Distinguished Professor Scheme (FidiPro)
• Prof. Lauri Koskela – FidiPro Professor
• Dr. Bhargav Dave – Senior Researcher
• 2013 – 2016
• Total funding - ~0.9M €
• 12 partners
• Part of the Aalto BIM initiative
Programme
• WP 1 – Linkages between Lean and BIM
• WP 2 – Field/Mobile Computing
• WP 3 – Commercial, organisational and design/production arrangements
Steering Group
WP 1 – Linkages between Lean and BIM
• Determining links between lean, BIM and sustainability and highlighting tools that support them
• Developing guidelines for realizing the synergy between Lean and BIM in key stages of the project process
• Developing and trialling a detailed but flexible design management system using lean/BIM. Specifically using tools such as Set-based design, Target Value Design, collocation of teams and the Last Planner System™
WP 2 – Field/Mobile Computing
• Developing applications that exploit state-of-the-art mobile computing and communication technologies to enhance and support lean construction activities
• Improving the progress monitoring, fit-out, hand over
and Facility Management (FM) systems through the use of BIM, mobile computing and surveying systems
• Exploring opportunities for knowledge management
using mobile technologies on field and develop potential solutions
WP 3 – Commercial, organisational and design/production arrangements
• Determining the common problems caused by incompatible commercial and organizational arrangements as observed in lean and BIM implementation and their root causes
• Identifying and evaluating the state-of-the-art commercial and organizational practices in lean and BIM implementation
• Determining initial principles for the simultaneous design of mutually compatible commercial, organizational and
design/production systems
• Trialling of the mentioned principles to integrated solutions for the design, production and installation of HVAC systems
Outputs/Outcomes – Overview
• Over 30 research papers
• 7 workshops organised/contributed
• 5 bachelor’s theses
• 5 Master’s theses (2 under progress)
• 2 Doctoral Students (Ongoing)
• 3 funded research projects
– VisiLean, Tekes
– ViBR, Tekes (Led by Vianova Oy)
– Intelligent Products, Highways England
• 1 start-up
• Construction project workflow (who, what, when) with synchronised 3D model
• Mobile app for on-
site use (start, alert, finish)
is the only production management system that combines Lean workflows and Building Information Model (BIM) visualisation in a cloud based service.
VisiLean is highly intuitive to use and can be accessed from
any type of computer or mobile device using a standard web browser.

ViBR – Virtual Big room
• A combination of physical and virtual processes, tools and technologies to support co-creation of design and construction
• Main objectives
• First understand the conceptual underpinnings of the Big Room
• Develop a robust collaborative process by collaborating lean design and construction tools and social science approach in
”knotworking”
• Develop knowledge based Lean and BIM tools to support collaborative design
• Develop specific interfaces to support design and construction in a collaborative way

User Interface Candidate
1.12.2015 14 2. Establish a 24/7 Collaborative Environment
• Virtual Work Planning
• Tasks by locations
• Task Scheduling
• Task Managing

Intelligent Products – IoT in construction
• A product centric vision
• The contextual operative logic of a product individual to support the lifecycle is embedded (or linked) within
individual components already from the design phase.
• The vision covers the lifecycle of the production process from design to construction and maintenance
– This new vision will help designers focus on value provision by making available real-life, context sensitive data from previous installations,
– enable self-organization of construction projects
– reduce the cost of owning facilities, facilitate feedback function for improving product design.

Summary
• A major research project
• Outputs range from practical applications to visionary research
• Helping set the agenda for construction research
including Lean, BIM and Technology for coming years
– Would not have been possible without the collaboration with the BIM initative and BIMforLean!
• Legacy will continue through ongoing research projects
