Master’s Programme in Engineering of Data-intensive Intelligent Software Sys- tems (EDISS)

EDISS is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programme delivered by four partner universi- ties – Åbo Akademi University, University of the Balearic Islands, University of L’Aquila and Mälardalen University.

In the age of data explosion, both data scientists and software engineers work with creating processes that in one way or another deal with the vast amount of available data. However, many of these processes are still carried out independently of each other, which often leads to the creation of sub-optimal systems.

The EDISS programme aims to bridge the gap between data scientists and software engineers by offering a range of courses that give the student a basis for engineering data-intensive intelligent software systems. Students will thus become experts in integrating data science and machine learning solutions into software and system en- gineering processes, which brings them to the forefront of the next generation of professionals that shape industry and society in the 21st century.

Two years, two universities

All students in the EDISS programme begin the master’s degree programme at Åbo Akademi University in Fin- land. During the first year of the programme, students are offered a wide selection of courses that help them build strong theoretical tools to be able to master the skills,

techniques and requirements of the second year speciali- zation. The area of specialization will determine which country and partner university the student will relocate to for the second year of the programme.

Second year specializations include:

• Industrial Machine Learning – Software engineering, hosted by Mälardalen University in Sweden.

• Model Driven Machine Learning – Software Engineer- ing, hosted by University of L’Aquila in Italy.

• Computer Vision and Intelligent Systems, hosted by University of The Balearic Islands in Spain.

The EDISS programme is intended for students with a Bachelor’s or equivalent undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent subject. For more information on admission requirements and details about the application process, visit the EDISS website through the link below.

Career opportunities

The job market has seen a significant growth in demand for expertise in data related fields. The expertise gained through the EDISS programme is still scarce among pro- fessionals in the field, a fact which serves as an advantage for graduates from the programme. The highly interna- tional nature of the programme and broad opportunities to network and gain practical experience through the programme internship and master’s thesis work can help facilitate opportunities after graduation.
