Aulanko's
history

theancientHäme cultfortheirrituals. Thefortificationthey
builtwas destroyed
around1250.AtaboutthesametimetheSwedesbegan erecting
HämeCastlenearby.
The
history
oftheactualpark
forestbegins
in 1883, whenaprominent
industrialist,ColonelHugo
Standertskjöld,
whohadacquired
a greatdeal ofwealthfrom thesupply
ofarms toRussia,purchased
theKarlberg
manor, as it then was. He commenced to have an
English-style park
forest established, a taskinvolving
150 horsemen and over 100 labourers. Swan Pond and ForestPond
pools
were created,aswellas newroads,a Granitecastle,summerhouses,panoramaterraces... and tocap itall, in1907a33-meterviewtowerwaserected on the Aulanko hill.A
large
numberofnewtreespecies,
flowersandshrubswere
planted
inthepark.
Partoftheindigenous
flora vanishedunderthisonslaught,
butoneofFinland'smostnoteworthy
touristsights
was created. Bestpreserved
are larch, silverfirandarolla
pine,
inadditiontolime,maple
andelm.Therearemanyshrubsgrownwild.ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PROTECTED AREA
As
Standertskjöld began
toagetherewerefearsregard ing
thepreservation
ofAulankoforposterity.
Thecolo nelexpressly
wishedthepark
toremainopen toeveryone.In 1930 thegovernorofHämeProvince issued an orderforthe
preservation
ofthearea.Inaccordancewith themanagementanduseplan,
furtherstandsandclumps
ofexotic treespecies
wereplanted
todiversify
theveg etation.Thewell-kept park
hasgradually given
way to arobust forestand a well-establishedflora.Today
one can find, forexample,
allof Finland's broadleaftreespecies

Metla is a research institute which was established in 1917 underthe
auspices
oftheMinistry
ofAgriculture
andForestry.
Metlaresearchesforestorientedproblems,
withparticular emphasis
onstudiesonthestateofhealth oftheforestandforestbiodiversity,
themultiple
use of forests, andtheunder-utilisationoftimberreserves.Metla
comprises
theHelsinki and Vantaaresearch centres,plus eight
other research stations aroundFin land.Inordertoensurethecontinuity
oflong-term
research, Metlamanagesabout150,000hectares
(ha)

protected
underthe NatureConservationAct. Its purpose is topreserve the nationallandscape
visible from the summit ofthe Aulankohill,together
withtheEnglish-style
manorpark
and the forest connected with this.Management
oftheprotected
areahasbeenentrustedtotheFinnishForestResearchInstitute(Metla).Thefifth managementanduse
plan
fortheareawascompleted
in 1995.Thepark
forestisbeing managed
with theaimofpreserving
itsbeautiful,flourishing park-like
character.Natural state forests,
covering
almost one halfofthepark, help
ensure thatbiodiversity
is maintainedin Aulanko forests.AULANKO AS A RESEARCH LOCATION
Aulanko
protected
areaisoneofMetla'sresearchforestareas. Aulanko's
special
features include standsof ex otic treespecies,
groves ofmasur birch, anextensive rowan stand,andunusualformsofmanytreespecies.
Aulankois also an
important
locationfor research intotheuseofforestsforrecreationalpurposesand
physi
calexercise. Thereis alsoa Metlaresearchunitstudy ing
tree seedcropsand
flowering.
