Dear future volunteer,

Voluntary work in the Philippines aims to provide you with an environment wherein you will achieve great inter-cultural understanding and appreciation of local lifestyle by exposing yourself with the daily realities of the local community. Sharing everyday life in another culture is the best way to get an understanding of it.You should be prepared to take over a certain amount of responsibility and work together with your co-workers.

Volunteering for development is guaranteed to be a life-changing experience. Once positive change is experienced it hopes to usher better conditions to hone your knowledge, attitude and skills towards the project and hopefully it would mark a lasting positive impact in your life and become a citizen of the world continuously striving for social development.

The Philippines is a fast growing country in Southeast Asia, with multiculturalism and rich Biodiversity that makes it an exciting and dynamic place to learn and grow.

OUR WORK PROFILE

Contains information about our Short Term Volunteer Program work placements in the Philippines. The aim is for you to be oriented about what kind of voluntary work we offer and help you to get acquainted about the opportunities and limitations of our projects.

We partner with different local partner institutions (LPIs) such as Not for profit organizations/Non-government Organizations, local government units, schools and other civic organizations that offer basic social services to vulnerable sectors such as children, youth, women, farmers, elderly, person with disabilities, etc. to advocate and empower through education, health, environment and agriculture development, training and capability building, livelihood and social entrepreneurship. Your potential participation to any of our projects will surely provide a mutually beneficial learningopportunities to carry out meaningful tasks and sustained support system with our LPIs. It will also further promote international voluntary

VISA INFORMATION

GIED is a recognized organization of the Philippine National Voluntary Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), a national government agency in charge of coordinating and promoting volunteerism for development in the country. Our STEPs Volunteer Program from 3 months up to five months are acknowledge as supportive to the volunteering for development vision of the Philippine government. Thus, all future incoming STEPs participants have a chance to access the Philippines’ Free Volunteers’ Visa (47(a)(2) visa) as well as guaranteed support and safety protection from the Philippine government provided that applications are submitted at least three months prior placement.

Volunteers who are 18 years old and above who intend to stay in the Philippines for more than three months to maximum of two years or more are encourage to apply for the 47a2 Visa. Please refer to our Visa Guidance for more details.

Hosting Situation

We offer two different host situations depending on the the project:

● Living in a Host family,expect to have a shared room with siblings or another member of the family. Typical Filipino family generally revolves around the extended family, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

● Live at the project site, with other (Staff or/and international) volunteers working at the same place. Living at the project site offers you a more independent living situation than staying with a host family but still there are rules that you need to follow and adopt.

1. EDUCATION

DESCRIPTION Livingstone Academy is a Christian Learning Institution whose vision is to see a "Defined Future through Changed Lives''. The school excels in holistic learner development and continues to strive for excellence in providing learning opportunities to the learners.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES A. Teaching music, sports and language

B. Assists during school camps and school field trips. (Sometimes camps are outside of the province and even outside of the country)

C. Organize inter school events, musical productions, community outreach, workshops seminars, etc.

TYPE: EDU/AGRI VOLS NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: Brgy. Babag, Cebu City PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTION CTU Cebu City Mountain Satellite Campus(CTU-CCMC) is an extended campus of Cebu Technological University (CTU). The University is a government run educational institution that is home to Filipino students from mostly low income families across the province of Cebu. As a mountain satellite campus it seeks the opportunity to promote quality learning potentials through various academic and extracurricular activities and enhancement of their natural resources.

CODE: GIEDMTV 03 NAME OF THE PROJECT: First High School for Hearing Impaired (FHSHI)

TYPE: EDU/ DISABILITY VOL NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: San Nicolas, Cebu City PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTION The First High School for Hearing Impaired (FHSHI) is a high school in Cebu City to serve persons with hearing disabilities since 1982. It offers relevant educational opportunities to persons with disabilities as hearing impaired, visually impaired those with learning disabilities, and the physically handicapped. We have been aiming to win the learners back to school as a place of fun, friendly and fostering atmosphere for learners to be functionally literate.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES 1. Compile all the conducted activities especially in the speech/

language sessions and classes.

2. Train at least 1 to 2 Special Education Teachers to continue its program implementation in speech/ language

Organize intercultural activities for the teacher and student.

2. HEALTH

CODE: GIEDMTV 04 NAME OF THE PROJECT: LGU-Cordova Rural Health Unit TYPE: HEALTH/SOCI VOLS NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: Cordova, Cebu PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTION The Municipality of Cordova belongs to Cebu Island of Visayas.

25% of the population are poor and seek medical attention at RHU. Since there is no hospital facility, it aims toprovide Primary Health care needs of the community.

CODE: GIEDMTV 05 NAME OF THE PROJECT: San Remigio Rural Health Unit TYPE: HEALTH/ SOCI VOL NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: San Remigio, Cebu PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTION San Remigio is a haven for those who seek serenity and calm. It is a third class municipality with a little over 51,000 residents based on the 2010 national census and some 35,000 registered voters.

Municipality of San Remigio aims to improve the quality of life of the residents through healthy lifestyle and other programs and to give opportunities to the residents to learn new cultures and interact with foreign nationals.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES ●Assist monitoring children’s situation regarding health and recovery

DESCRIPTION Farming and fishing remain the major source of income for the people of Barili, with its agricultural sector complemented by a vibrant livestock market which is one of the biggest of its kind in the whole province. The LGU of Barili hopes to promote social and economic development through enhanced agritourism productivity, well-planned infrastructure programs, good governance and sustained disaster resilience activities for a livable and drug-free community

TYPE: AGRI/ENVI VOL NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: Alegria, Cebu PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTION This Demo farm is designed as an integrated vegetable, livestock and poultry production enterprise development project is a perfect combination to improve and increase the profitability of countryside entrepreneurship, simultaneously reducing the cost of production. Its inter-relationship would provide a complementary existence making it possible to attain an optimum productivity at low cost.

DESCRIPTION The overall long-term objective of the CAFEi is to create resilient food ecosystems throughout Cebu especially during the crisis brought about by lockdown through the COVID-19 pandemic. The Grow-It-Yourself Feeding and Gardening program at its core will provide selected beneficiary families in Cebu accessibility toFood, Now and building the capacity of the families forFood, Tomorrow.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES Focused on feeding families healthy food each week while simultaneously teaching them what healthy food is, how best to cook them, and how to grow their own food

TYPE: ENVI/AGRI/SOCI/LIVE VOL NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: Talisay City, Cebu PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTIONS SEED4Com is a non-stock non-profit organization. It is founded to provide help in improving human conditions and empowering poverty- stricken areas, rural and last-mile communities in the Philippines. It traces its roots as an initiative organized to support the groundwork for Project EnKindle in helping those devastated communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES SEED4Com addresses grassroots gaps to spur restoration, rehabilitation and sustainable growth focusing on clean energy solutions, capacity building and rural entrepreneurship as key enablers of rural community development.

CODE:GIEDMTV 10 NAME OF PROJECT: Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary TYPE: ENVI/SOCI VOL NEEDED: 1-2 ADDRESS: San Vicente, Lapu-lapu City PROJECT AIMS AND

DESCRIPTIONS Olango Wildlife Sanctuary is a major refueling station for approximately 40,000 migratory birds. It supports the largest concentration of migratory birds found so far in the Philippines. The Philippine Dept of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has been tasked to protect and manage the area. A sanctuary office has been established in the area and serves as a jump-off point for bird watching in the reserve.The goal is to harmonize Eco-tourism and biodiversity conservation in Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

DESCRIPTIONS Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center II is a non-residential facility established as vocational rehabilitation centers to serve persons with disabilities (PWDs). It caters to those who have impairments in their vision, hearing, speech, mobility and those with other forms of physical, mental and social impairment, aged 18-59 years old, willing to acquire vocational skills and get employed, coming from three Philippine Visayas regions (Regions 6, 7 and 8).

PROJECT ACTIVITIES Promotion of InternationalVoluntary ServiceExchange Programsand Inter-cultural learning

Training and Capability Building programs on volunteerism and inter- cultural learning

Establishment of partners and network of organizations to promote volunteerism and inter-cultural learning advocacy

Marketing/ Resource Mobilization

Social entrepreneurship and community development partnership with local partners and communities

(Note: With the new set up due to pandemic, expect to be exposed in organizing other activities in an online environment)

VOLUNTEER’S

REQUIREMENTS Flexible, open-minded, team player and able to adopt local life situation

High interest and or has background onphotography,photoand video documentation, graphic arts, Information Technology, Data-Base Programming, website and social media management

Independent and can handle limited supervision

Interest in presentation and communication skills

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Support to the organization’s promotion of international voluntary service programs

Assist the staff in the daily office work of the organization which include but not limited to the following: development of promotional materials like print, audio and video presentations, do volunteer related advocacy campaigns online or in schools, communities, institutions, events, etc.

Coordinator or camp leader for international or local workcamps

Assist during training/capacity building programs, community visits and other IVS related field work

Organize/ facilitate special online/physical projects and activities

Look for Grants/Donations for social entrepreneurship and community development

ACCOMMODATION Living with host family(expect to have a shared room with your host sister or brother)
