DIAKONIAN TUTKIMUS 1 – 2020 DIAKONIAN TUTKIMUS 1 – 2020
HARRI HAUTALA
The essential features of Martin Luther’s concept of deacon’s office are found in Luther’s Lecture on 1 Timothy (WA 26, 1–120). In the third chapter of the commentary, Luther defines the functions of the deacon. This article is a research inspired by John N. Collins, where the sources of diaconia are interpreted as aware of the diaconia research traditions. Lecture on 1 Timothy was born as a compilati- on of lectures by Martin Luther in 1527–1528 at the University of Wittenberg.
The work seeks to perceive the New Testament Church order, using the analogy between Paul’s time and the time of writing the commentary. My purpose is to find out the function of the deacon in the work and to place the deacon in the ecclesiological poverty care unit in the ideal church, whose views were outlined by Luther in the Lecture on 1 Timothy.

This paper analyzes and compiles observations that I as a project coordinator for Protected by the Cross diaconal work project of the Helsinki Parish Union have made with the help of participant observation during the years 2017–2020.
These observations concern the Finnish societal structures and actors and their ways of functioning in the decision-making processes that concern foreigners as well as assistance given to them. The diaconal project was located in the unit for special diaconal work and its emphasis was on help and assistance given to undo- cumented migrants, especially in the capital area. In this paper, I will observe the themes related to undocumentedness through four client cases, which have emer- ged through participant observation from the work performed with clients. As a theoretical framework, I implement the ethics of empowerment and the concept of agency that is closely linked to the use of power. I examine in the article the assistance given to the undocumented migrants from the point of view of the use of power, as an ethical question and as a part of church’s basic mission, diaconia.

Love for the neighbour is a central Christian doctrine, and it is said to direct the course of actions, too. However, in the practical situations the concept seems to get multiple sets of interpretations. This article analyses how bishops in the Church of Finland use the concept in two topical themes – the same sex marriage and asylum seekers. We focus on public statements by the bishops during 2015–
2017. The article questions the role of the love for neighbour as a cornerstone in the church. The analysis points out that the concept of love for the neighbour holds several meanings and dimensions to it.
