Preface

The volume

of

the

SKY

yearbook that you now have

in

your hand

is

both the biggest and the most international to date. We have also tried to make

it

more pleasing to the eye by using the same style and font throughout.

This volume has been inspired by two events organized by the Linguistic Association of Finland during the aurumn

of

1992.

The first event, held at Mekrijärvi in the easterrirnost part of Fin- land, was

a

workshop on the syntax

of

spoken language. This topic is represented by two articles in the current volume: one by

Auli

Hakulinen and the other

by

Knud Lambrecht, who, as one

of

the invited speakers, played a central role
