The ice winter 1965/66 was more severe than average in the Finnish sea areas. It began early and lasted long especially in the northernmost areas. Ice formed even in the Danish Sounds and in the Southern Baltic.

There, however, the ice winter was rela- tively short.

The formation of ice started in the middle of November and ice formed rapidly from the very beginning. Thus the Bay of Bothnia was covered by the first ice on December 24, and on December 31 it re- ceived the permanent ice cover. This hap- pened remarkably earlier than usually. Ice covered the Sea of Bothnia on January 18, and plenty of pack ice was found in the Gulf of Finland. The ice situation turned very difficult in early February, when thick ice floes were carried westward from the Gulf of Finland by the east wind and the ice limit on the Northern Baltic lay about 75 nautical miles south of Utö. About that time ice formed also in the Danish Sounds and along the German coast. The largest extent of the ice cover (370 000 km2) was attained on February 22.

Ice receded and melted rapidly in the Danish Sounds and in the Southern Baltic, but in the Northern Baltic a wide belt of thick ice occured as late as the end of March.

This ice field did not spread out until early April. In the beginning of April a wide open area formed along the Finnish coast of the Sea of Bothnia making the ice situation easy for navigation. The melting of ice was delayed, however, and thick ice floes were still found north of the Åland Sea in the middle of May. Ice melted slowly also in the Bay of Bothnia, where the last ice floes disappeared in early June.

Vaikeita ahtautumia muodostui meren poh- joisosiin erikoisesti Kemin ulostuloväylälle.

Jäänmuodostus jatkui tammikuussa ja tammikuun lopussa olivat Selkämeri, Ah- venanmeri ja Suomenlahti peittyneet koko- naan jäähän. Pohjoisella Itämerellä ajo- jäätä ulottui lähes 30 meripeninkulmaa Utön ulkopuolelle. Tämä jäi talven laajim- maksi, ollen se 190 000 km2.

Keskitalvelle ominaisia pakkasia ei tänä talvena tullut ja jään taantuminen pääsi al- kamaan keskimääräistä aikaisemmin. Suo- menlanden itäosassa samoinkuin Selkä- merellä olleet ahtojään vyöhykkeet irto- sivat ja hajaantuivat suhteellisen myöhään huhtikuussa. Perämerelle avautuneet pit- kät, rannikon suuntaiset railot edistivät meriliikenteen sujumista, vaikka muualla jääkentät olivat vielä paksuja. Viimeiset jäät Suomen rannikolta hävisivät touko- kuun 27 päivänä, Ruotsin puolelta, Malöre- fin tienoilta kesäkuun alussa.

The ice winter 1966/67 was somewhat easier than average. It certainly bagan early and developed rapidly in the beginning, but the midwinter remained mild and new ice did not form after January. Thus the ice situa- tion along the southwest coast of Finland was easier than usual. In the Bay of Bothnia, however, ice grew much thicker, but the shore leads that opened in late winter made navigation easier.

The first ice formed as early as in late October and early November, but the real ice winter did not come until December 7.

New ice formed rapidly, and on January 10 all the Bay of Bothnia was covered by ice.

In the northernmost Bay of Bothnia trou- blesome ridges had formed outside Kemi.

The formation of ice continued in Janua- ry, and at the end of January ice covered wholly the Sea of Bothnia, the Åland Sea and the Gulf of Finland. In the Northern Baltic the pack ice extended for almost 30 nautical miles outside Utö. This was the largest extent of ice (190 000 km2) during this winter.

Cold periods, which characterize an ordi- nary midwinter, did not occur this year, and ice started to recede earlier than usual.

The belts of ridged ice on the eastern Gulf

of Finland and on the Sea of Bothnia broke

up and spread out rather late in April. All-

though the ice cover on the Bay of Bothnia

still remained thick, navigation became

easier because of the long shore leads that

had opened along the coast. The last ice

was reported on the Finnish coast on May

27 and on the Swedish coast near Malören

in early June.

Jäätalven 1967/68 vaikeusastetta on pidet- tävä keskinkertaisena.

The ice winter 1967/68 was close to the normal. Ridges along the Finnish coast made the ice situation difficult in the Sea of Bothnia, whereas the situation in the Archipelago Sea and in the Gulf of Finland remained rather easy.

The winter began relatively late, in the beginning of December, but the first cold periods were very intense and caused the rapid formation of ice. Thus the ice covered the Bay of Bothnia and the eastern and middle parts of the Gulf of Finland in early January, which was close to average.

In January the formation of ice was very slow, but in early February ice already covered the Sea of Bothnia and the North- ern Baltic to the Bogskär lighthouse. This was the most extensive ice cover of the winter (215 000 km2), and this ice situation remained unchanged till February 25.

The ice on the Gulf of Finland receded

rapidly and the melting occurred earlier

than usual. Wind, however, pressed the ice

against the coast of the Sea of Bothnia and

thick ice-ridges lay still up to the end of

April. The ice cover on the Bay of Bothnia

did neither break nor melt until the middle

of April. At that time ice drifted towards

the Swedish coast, and thus the Finnish

coast become ice-free earlier than usual.

(12)

jaantuivat, osittain ajautuivat Ruotsin ran- nikolle.

The ice winter 1968/69 was somewhat more difficult than the average, especially in regard to the duration.

The winter began exceptionally early in the middle of October, when a narrow belt of ice formed in the northernmost part of the Bay of Bothnia. The ice cover did not, however, spread to any noteworthy extent during November and December. From the beginning of January on intense, though generally short cold periods, did occur. In February the cold weather prevailed longer and new ice formed rather rapidly. On March 3 the largest extent of ice (260 000 km2) was attained; the Bay of Bothnia, the Sea of Bothnia, and the Gulf of Finland were totally covered by ice, and the ice on the Northern Baltic extended for about 65 nautical miles south of Utö.

In March severe night frosts made the ice grow thicker, and the ice situation became more difficult, especially in the Sea of Bothnia.

Thus the receding and melting of ice was

delayed. In the Gulf of Finland and in the

Sea of Bothnia, however, the winds partly

spread out the ice cover, partly drifted it

against the Swedish coast. The ice on the

Bay of Bothnia remained unbroken until

the end of April. Opening the northern

harbours for navigation became easier as

the ice along the Finnish coast was fairly

Ievel. The last ice on the Bay of Bothnia was

reported on June 12.

(14)

Jäätalvi 1969/70 on laskettava ankariin tal- viin kuuluvaksi.

Talven alkaminen tapahtui marraskuussa keskimääräisiä ajankohtia noudattaen.

The ice winter 1969/70 was rather severe. It lasted long in all sea areas and the amount of ice became great. However, ice field on the Finnish side remained rather level, and the most troublesome ridges formed along the Swedish coast.

The winter began in due course in No- vember, but then the formation of ice increased greatly during an almost con- tinuous cold period from the middle of December to the end of February. The largest extent of ice (370 000 km"-) was attained on February 19, when ice covered the Gulf of Bothnia, the Sea of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland and the Northern Baltic to Gotland. Ice formed also on the Danish Sounds and on the coast of the Southern Baltic. The ice remained rather level in these areas.

On February 20 the ice on the Danish Sounds and the Southern Baltic began to recede. In the Northern Baltic and the Sea of Bothnia the wind pressed the ice against the Swedish coast, where the ice situation was difficult throughout the spring. The level ice cover on the Bay of Bothnia remained unbroken to late spring, and the melting was not brought to an end until the beginning of June.
