Jatkotutkimusaiheita on olemassa monia liittyen PRT-menetelmän käyttöön autistisesti käyttäytyvien lasten kuntoutus- ja opetusmenetelmänä. Mielenkiintoista olisi jatkaa Elmerin tapauksen tutkimista ja seurata, miten hänen sanallinen ilmaisunsa sekä vuo-rovaikutustaidot ovat kehittyneet intensiivijakson päätyttyä. Tässä tutkimuksessa tar-kastelun ulkopuolelle jäivät intensiivijakson päiväkotivideoinnit. Elmerin kehittymistä tässä kontekstissa olisi mielenkiintoista myös tarkastella. Mielenkiintoinen tarkastelun-kohde olisi myös, kuinka Elmerin taitojen kehittymistä tuki perheelle ja päiväkodin henkilökunnalle annettu ohjaus PRT-menetelmän käyttöön.

Tutkimukset ovat osoittaneet sen, että vanhemmat voivat oppia PRT-menetelmän ja olla vaikuttavia intervention toteuttajia autistisesti käyttäytyville lapsilleen. Suhteelli-sen harvassa on kuitenkin vielä tutkimustieto lyhytkestoisesta ja ryhmämuotoisesta kuntoutuksesta. (Minjarez ym. 2011, 98.) Tutkimusta aiheeseen liittyen voisi tehdä myös useamman perheen intensiivijaksosta ja siitä, millaista kehitystä eri perheiden kohdalla jakson aikana on tapahtunut sekä PRT-menetelmän soveltuvuudesta ryhmä-muotoisena kuntoutuksen muotona. Olisi mielenkiintoista myös saada esimerkiksi haastattelemalla tietoa vanhempien ja lapsen kokemuksista PRT-menetelmän soveltu-vuudesta.

Tämä pro gradu –tutkielma antoi yhden tapauksen kautta vahvistusta PRT-menetelmän soveltuvuudelle tukemaan autistisesti käyttäytyvän lapsen vuorovaiku-tustaitojen sekä sanallisen kommunikoinnin kehittymistä. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkas-teltiin niin lapsen, vanhemman kuin ohjaajan toimintaa. PRT-menetelmän kehittämi-sen kannalta olisi tärkeää tuottaa lisää tietoa kaikista näistä näkökulmista.
